We all know the ultimate hangover cure is prevention. It’s also obvious that the best form of hangover prevention is to never drink alcohol. But going out and having a few drinks with friends is a huge part of being a normal, social human being.
Plus it’s fun.
I’m sure you’ve heard about many different ‘so-called’ hangover cures over the years. I’m willing to bet none of those worked. Over on our sister site, AvoidingHangovers.com I’ve been putting my body & mind through the tough experiments to see what really works.
Screw those hangover cure myths!
I’ve discovered 3 simple ways to prevent a hangover without giving up your favorite beer.
1. Increase Your Body’s Glutathione Levels Before Drinking
According to Lifeextension.com, glutathione is one of the body’s most important natural antioxidants and plays a key role in alcohol detoxification.
When you drink alcohol your body breaks it down causing the production of an even more toxic chemical than the alcohol itself, called acetaldehyde.
This chemical will give you a headache, muscle & joint fatigue, inflammation, might make you puke and eventually will be the direct cause of your horrendous hangover.
Glutathione, present in your body is your savior from this process. It goes to battle with the hangover culprit acetaldehyde.
But there is a problem, the more alcohol you consume the more your body’s glutathione levels become depleted. You NEED more glutathione if you want to stay hangover-free!
The easiest way to increase your body’s glutathione levels is through exercise and supplementation.
A few supplements that are known to boost your glutathione are N-Acetyl Cysteine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Milk Thistle, Liposomal Glutathione & Vitamin C. Take any combination of these 30-60 minutes before you start drinking, then you’ll be able to enjoy your night out, along with the morning after.
2. Take Activated Charcoal Before Bed
WebMD tells us that activated charcoal is used to treat poisonings, reduce intestinal gas, lower cholesterol levels, prevent hangovers and treat bile flow problems during pregnancy.
Typically, charcoal capsules are created by burning sources of carbon – like wood, or coconut shells. I recommend using a coconut charcoal, they tend to be cleaner and far more effective.
The burning of the coconut shells causes it to become a highly absorbent material. This material will bind to the alcohol toxins still present in your body over the course of your sleep cycle and help you to feel better in the morning.
**BONUS** I would recommend drinking a decent amount of water before bed too, but try mixing in some pink himalayan sea salt for adrenal gland protection. I always recommend drinking your water like this the morning after consuming alcohol, as well. This will reduce all the stress being put on your adrenal glands.
3. Drink Coffee With Butter & MCT Oil In The Morning
After you’ve drank a glass of water mixed with pink himalayan sea salt, brew some delicious coffee.
This won’t end up being your typical cup of jo.. You’re going to pour the coffee into a blender, then add 1 tablespoon of grass-fed butter for every 1 cup of coffee you brewed. Next you’ll want to do the same with MCT Oil – 1 tablespoon for every 1 cup of coffee.
Now you blend it up for 15 seconds.
WAALAA! You should have a creamy, latte-looking brew. Drink up! I’ll usually add a couple drops of stevia to sweeten it up a bit.
From my own experimentation, I’ve found this coffee blend to clear mind fog, reduce lingering alcohol inflammation, burn off those empty alcohol calories and give me amazingly focused energy with no late afternoon crash.
So, while there is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to dealing with hangovers – not everything is a hangover cure myth. There are plenty of legitimate, healthy and all-natural hangover prevention techniques that actually work!
